PROJECT GAIA
By Newton Asimov
Every once in a while as we sit there in what we like to refer to as creative writing block, it is not uncommon for us to drool on ourselves, get leg cramps, or use doughnuts to sit on. Don't get me wrong, I don't say these things to show the limitations of a designer’s bandwidth. I say them to paint a picture for how much effort and thought goes into everything we do here at MachinaTek. We are constantly pushing the limits and now we control some super-secret squirrel stuff that’s well, to say the least, extremely exciting!
We are calling it Project GAIA. While I am unable to disclose specifics of this Project I can tell you this. It is a watch. It is from Earth. It goes on your wrist. Isn’t that exciting! Now I know I really didn't tell you a lot about this project so far other then it's a watch and its name is GAIA, but think of the GAIA as the Anti-Smart Watch.
You see there are certain Design fads throughout history that come and go in a relatively short time frame. Take glossy buttons on websites in the mid 2000's. Everyone did it because it was the cool thing to do at the time. Well thankfully everyone came to their senses and we have moved back to more flat simplistic graphical interfaces.
This is how we here at MachinaTek are looking at these so called "smart watches". Especially when you factor in Moore's Law which states "that, over the history of computing hardware, the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit doubles approximately every two years". This is widely used in the technology realm to describe how fast technology evolves and it is not as farfetched to imagine phones anywhere other than our wrists. Leave our wrists alone mega-conglomerate companies!
So Project GAIA is our answer to this fad. It is how we will fight back this tide of frivolous design. The challenge now we face is how do you make a watch that is timeless, encompasses functionality that currently doesn’t exist, and not put a computer chip in it? Time will tell.
